About Palm Beach Gardens

Palm Beach Gardens was incorporated in 1959 by wealthy landowner and insurance magnate John D. MacArthur. On March 20th of that year, he announced plans to develop 4,000 acres and build homes for 55,000 people. He chose the name Palm Beach Gardens after his initial choice of Palm Beach City was denied. He had a plan for a "garden city" so he altered the name slightly.

Prior to development the land was dairy cattle grazing land. Instructions were given that trees that had been growing there for many years would remain and that streets and construction would go around them.

Since the arrival of the Professional Golfers' Association of America, in 1965, the city has billed itself as the Golf Capital of the World.

In 1999, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation sold approximately 5,000 acres in the City of Palm Beach Gardens. This land was developed quickly and there is much new growth in the city. The large Banyan tree that is at the entrance of the city was saved from being cut down in a neighboring town. It cost $30,000 and 1008 hours of manpower to move it, and another one was moved the following year. These trees still remain and are featured on the city shield.
